For joining Capital City Volleyball Club, it all starts with attending tryouts, then being selected and invited to be part of a Capital City Volleyball Club team. This is the primary approach to joining CCVC. Tryouts are conducted once per season typically during mid October, to the first or second week in November. All players must attend the tryout session to participate with one or any of our teams.

Team Levels

The philosophy, commitment, costs, number of players, number of practices, and number of tournaments varies based on each team level and is briefly described below.

The Development Teams are oganized by ages and typically have overlap between the teams with regard to ages. This season we have grouped the 9-12s as the D4 team. Each season brings a different quantity of players in different ages, so we try to be as flexible and "smart" with the structure of the teams and the ages of the grils on each team. This is a level for those new to the volleyball scene and with developing skills. Between 20 and 40 players across 2 to 4 teams comprise the Development level teams. The age groups of players typically ranges from 9 to 13 years old. This team practices approximately 2 hours per week for 18-20 weeks, starting in December to late March. There is no competitive tournament play for this level, although CCVC tries to include the Development team(s) in a CCVC hosted inter-club tourney or mini-tourney, but this is not a guarantee. Since this level is mostly for younger players and developing players, our guarantee is that each player will improve their fundamental skills. The total cost per Development player can range from $800 to $1000 for the season.

The Competitive Travel Teams are organized by the-1, -2 for Platinum / Gold and -3, -4, -5 Silver / Bronze / Copper levels and shall carry no more than 12 players, plus any practice players. There may be an occasion that the player quantity is revised to accomodate special circumstances and issues during any given season and on a case-by-case-basis. Like past seasons, players WILL BE permitted to TRYOUT to "play up" in an upper age group. The tryout selections, completed by the coaches will determine if a player is invited to "play-up".

Age levels for with the Competitive Travel Teams is more formal, and follows the guidelines established by the USAV organization in accordance with the
Player Age Chart. However, in all cases the age of the team is determined be of the oldest player age as of September 1 of the current calendar year.

-4, -5 Competitive Level - A player on a -4 / -5 team requires a moderate level of commitment to the sport, CCVC, and their team mates, and very, very little travel, certainly but less than the -1, -2 or -3 teams. There is competitive play for this level, with this competition predominantly being organized by the Carolina Region and involves playing in 1-2-3 In-Region Tournaments. The cost for this level team can range from $1000 to 1400 per player for the season. This team level practices approximately 2 hours per week for 20-23 weeks, starting in December to late March or early April. These level teams have a quantity of 10-12 players. The philosophy for this level is "play-to-play" vs. "play-to-win" and provides players a chance to improve their existing fundamentals. This level team can be in any age bracket.

-2, -3 Competitive Level - A player on a -2 / -3 team requires a stong level of commitment to the sport, CCVC, and their team mates, as well some travel, but less than the -1 team. There is competitive play for this level, and this competition is predominantly organized by the Carolina Region. This level of team is expected to participate in a few to nearly all of the In- Region Tournaments, typically as many as 6-7, and may and play in some (1 or 2) Out-of-Region Tournaments, including the Williamsburg Rumble, Quest, Hi-Neighbor. The cost for this level team can range from $1300 to $1800 per player for the season. This team level practices approximately 2-4 hours per week for 20-23 weeks, starting in December to late March or early April. This level team's objective is to win, but not all all costs or at the expense of NO playing time for players. Playing time will be uneven based on the skill level of the each player, but there will not be a circumstance when a player gets NO playing time at all. This level team can be in any age bracket.

-1 Competitive Level - A player on a -1 level team requires the greatest amount of dedication to the sport, CCVC, traveling, and their team mates. It is the highest cost and commitment level. Each player and the team is expected to participate in all of the In -Region Tournaments, typically 6-9 and register along with attend the National tournament in July should the team receive a bid to attend. This level plays in some (3 or 4) Out-of-Region Tournaments, including the Williamsburg Rumble, Monument Classic, Quest, Hi-Neighbor, Shamrock, NEQ, Hampton Roads Invitational and others as budgeted each season. The cost for this level team can range from $1700 to $2500 per player for the season. This team level practices approximately 4 hours per week for 22-25 weeks, starting in December to May. This team's objective is to finish first or second in pool play in every tournament. This could mean at the expense of some players not getting ANY playing time.

Practice Players for the -2, -3, -4, -5 teams have the option of selecting one or two team members as "Practice" members. These players are invited onto the team to work with the coaches and other players during the practice sessions. The benefits are two-fold: the coaches can better fill out the court for internal scrimmages, and these players, who otherwise wouldn't be asked to be on a team, receive coaching and practice time during the off-season from their school teams. At the same time it must be made clear by the coaches that the role of each team's Practice Players is just that, as a practice player. The downside of being a Practice Players is they would not be permitted to participate in playing in any tournament without a) the team having 7 or less players in attendance for a single tournament AND / OR b) receipt of the full dues payment by the Practice Player, after an invitation to play for the team is made by the coach to become a "full player", if a replacement for a full team member is needed, due to another player "dropping out" of particpating with the CCVC team. The Practice player cost is $850-1000 per player for the season.
