While the Capital City Volleyball Club weekly practices will focus on team work, these Special Position Academy (SPA) clinic sessions will provide our players personal development, special attention and skills improvement on the positions each athlete currently plays and knows, but will also allow development in positions they wish to learn more about and need to improve.

The Practice Calendar outlines the session schedule.

The coaching support is to have Club Director / Stevie Mussie and, 11 year Capital City Volleyball Club coach Lorriane Hudak to be the Lead Coach and we will have between 4-6 other Assistant Coaches "covering" the courts under the leadership of these Coaches. The players will be organized and taught in both an entire group setting and also in a court-by-court setting, based on the skill center for each of the 4 courts. Also the mix of the ages, skills and desires will effect how each session will be run. Flexibilty to address the needs of the players, based on the combination will be a hallmark of this program.

Special Position Academy
The Special Position Academy (SPA) clinic sessions  will involve using 2-4 courts, organizing the players based on skills, interest and age during these weekly sessions, scheduled to be held at NetSports, on Tuesday 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm from December to late March. The clinics will include:

    • Passing / Digging
    • Serving

Ball Control / Passing / Digging
We will teach the type of ball control that will cause envy of players and coaches at every level to help you become invaluable to any volleyball as a great passer. Our focus will be on floor defense, non-setter setting; passing, serve-receive, individual defensive techniques (rolling, collapsing, digging, diving, run-throughs). Additionally, team defensive systems, reading hitters, platform angles, overhead digging. Defense and ball control like nobody's business!

Hitting / Blocking -Middle / Outside / Right Side
These sessions will be multi-pronged and cover attacking and blocking. The focus will be on specifics for each hitter position and teach how to attack the various sides of the defensive court. The attacking will include an education on armswing, approach, footwork, D1 and D2 swings, off-speed and recovery shots. our coaches will focus on approach, timing, arm swing and shot selection. For blocking we will help players understand how to use the block, as a hitting strategy and also teach that blocking is more than being tall. The best blockers have great fundamentals that include good footwork, hand position, body posture, movement along the net, hitter identification, vision training, and blocking strategy. Both these player transition plays and attack options of serve receive will also be covered.

Setting
For those players that desire to improve their setting skills, these sessions are a super opportunity. Setters and non-setters alike will work on footwork, hand positioning, balance and body positioning, recovery sets, solid set decision-making, and teach "square" to position 4 to enhance "deception" of the defense. Coaches will discuss strategy, set selection, setter leadership, motivation of fellow teammates and coping with pressure situations.  This is an excellent opportunity to try out setting for the first time Plus experienced setters will find these sessions a great opportunity to reinforce proper habits while receiving coaching feedback during multi-reps.
