No coach in today's sports world, regardless of the sport, would disagree that a focus on the basics and fundamentals will deliver results. The objective for Capital City Volleyball Club coaches is to TEACH fundamentals.

Now make no mistake, each coach has their different style, approach, and methods to getting to these fundamentals when teaching at CCVC, but certainly our coaches are required to introduce and teach these listed fundamentals and more, as such they are to be thoroughly and regularly reviewed throughout practices and at tournament events.

  • Base position
  • Positions numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 6)
  • Perimeter, rotation, and modified perimeter defenses
  • Basic offense types (5-1, 6-2, 4-2)
  • Passing platform / foot movement / body position (shoulder drop, body behind the ball)
  • Defensive player movement with the ball while the offense prepares to attack
  • Blocking coverage (defensive coverage)
  • Blocking / attacking transition
  • Attack footwork, attack starting position
  • Setting player position, hand positions, setter role
  • Setter, hitter communication
  • Overlap and serve-receive options (tri-line, 2 person)
  • Serve toss drills (including hustling to position after serving)
  • Proper arm swing hitting drill
  • Blocking movement (who on the front line is supposed to move --where and when)
  • Blocking technique / footwork
  • Reading the sets / hitters
  • Other basics like talking, watching the ball all of the time, team spirit, team support, etc.
