Pool Play Formats PDF Print E-mail

Below is the Carolina Region's pool play structure for 4, 5, 6 and 7 team pools. This should assist with determining the order for which teams will be playing, sitting, or refereeing during tournaments.

  1. FOUR TEAM POOLS
Top 2 teams advance to playoffs.
Format for Adults - 3 sets to 25 points rally score. There should be a coin toss and teams switch sides half-way through (at 13) to be consistent with a 3-set match (even though it is still pool play).
Format for Juniors - 2 out of 3 sets to 25 points rally score (third set to 15 switch at 8).
Seeded teams in spots 1 and 4.

The new FIVE-Team format (above) for Juniors has one team playing an extra match. Why?

First, one of the major concerns in our post-season survey of Junior coaches, players, and parents last season was how long the tournaments were taking. The old five-team format was a major factor in this since it required 10 matches. So, the Junior Division came up with the new five-team format that eliminated 2 matches but still allowed every team to get their required minimum amount of matches. The Carolina Region has always guaranteed teams a minumum of THREE matches when they play a tournament (four-team pool gets teams the minimum). There will be some formats (6- and 7-team pools) and teams that make playoffs will get more but the minimum has always been three matches when entering a tournament. So, the new 5-team format had to get every team in it 3 matches. In order to do that, ONE team has to play 4 so all the other teams can play THREE. The current format has the third seeded team playing the four matches. If the seeding holds then the top two teams will win their matches against the third seed and control their destiny for playoffs. If upsets occur, then teams still controlled their destiny on the court and the teams qualifying (or not qualifying) for playoffs will have earned their spot during pool play (as it should be). Teams will be ranked in the pool based on match win percentage and then game win-percentage.
